The Austin Paradox by William R. Leibowitz

GUEST POST

Hello Laurie – Thanks for giving me the opportunity to post.

I wanted to tell you about the protagonist in my novels-- Miracle Man and its sequel, The Austin Paradox -- as Robert James Austin is a really unusual character. Both books are psychological/medical/conspiracy thrillers that are centered around him.
Robert –or “Bobby” as he is commonly referred to --possesses an extraordinary intelligence, the likes of which has never previously existed.  We’re talking about someone with 10x the intelligence of Albert Einstein.  There’s no good reason for Bobby to have this level of intelligence –and why he has it—is one of the mysteries explored in the novels.  Suffice to say that Bobby’s life had a tragic beginning—within minutes of being born, he was stuffed in a garbage bag and thrown into a dumpster.  What became of him subsequent to that brutal abandonment forms the basis of Miracle Man.
Early in Bobby’s childhood he begins to suffer intense nightmares and he falls into prolonged trances—conditions that continually get worse as he gets older and makes progress in his quest to cure diseases (which becomes his life work).  Why he has these nightmares and trances, is another mystery that is explored.
Throughout Miracle Man and The Austin Paradox, Bobby battles internal and external forces that try to destroy him –among which are Big Pharma and its political cronies.  One would think that a man who has devoted his extraordinary genius to inventing cures for diseases would have no opponents—unfortunately that is far from true.
The reason why I wrote Miracle Man and The Austin Paradox is because I wanted to create a modern day believable ‘super hero’ who is an ‘anti-celebrity’.  I thought that such a person could be inspirational when contrasted with the meritless celebrities that dominate media today (e.g., the reality TV stars who are famous for being famous, but have no real talent).  I believe that the cult of self-centered celebrities has undermined our social fabric and in my opinion, created a bad role model for kids today.  Robert James Austin is an antidote to this –a refreshing change.
