Chapter 1

Sydney, Australia

It all started with a bus ride.

It was a bus ride that Belle didn’t normally take, to a place she only visited on the weekends, on a Friday that was much like any other. She’d gone to work, as usual, had two coffees, a salad for lunch, and had turned in her story by three pm, all with one notable difference.

After work, she caught the 443 bus to Ben’s place.

Belle often wondered if things would’ve turned out differently had she gone straight home that day. Would the ones she loved still be alive? Can a single bus ride change your entire fate?

On this particular Friday, the one that changed everything, the air had turned cool. A change of season was in the air. The sunburnt days of an Australian summer were gone and the leaves on the trees shimmered crimson.

Belle Hamilton broke into a brisk walk on King Street, her long woven braids swaying with each step, her lovely face set in concentration. She didn’t want to miss the bus. If she did, there might not be another for forty minutes and she couldn’t afford to be late.

This wasn’t her usual route on a Friday afternoon. Normally, Belle walked down to Circular Quay and caught the ferry across the harbour to the Darling Street Wharf. She’d reach her flat, change out of her work clothes and meet Riley for dinner. After a sufficient amount of champagne had been consumed Riley would go home with a new lover and Belle would go home to her bed.

She’d rise early on Saturday morning, climb into her car and leave the vibrancy of Darling Street behind her for the sleepy foreshore of Pyrmont. She’d spend the entire weekend with her fiancĂ© Ben at his place.

He’d watch sports or read the paper. She’d don her apron and cook up a storm in his kitchen. She loved the feel of him pottering around after her, slurping from a spoon of bubbling hot broth or stealing a cookie from the tray before they’d had time to cool.

Cooking for Ben made her happy. Being close to him, waking up beside him, everything about him made her happy. He was her soulmate, her first love, her entire world. Her relationship was just as it should be. There was nothing she would change.

Okay, maybe there was one thing…
