Summer of Haight '67 by Diane Sager: Interview with Excerpt

INTERVIEW

Welcome! Thanks for being here and  answering a few questions.  How did you start your writing career?
I have made up stories in my head ever since I was a small child and I wrote sporadically throughout high school and university, but my first big venture was a vampire novel that I wrote in 2000. It sat quietly in a box for many years! Vampires? Box?....... Yeah, I know !…… Anyway, I have just re-written it and it will be published by summer. It WILL dammit.
As a busy high school special Ed. teacher it didn’t leave me much time to write but then I made the move to full time writing about 5 years ago. I also write as D.S. Sager when I have my horror head on (my husband says I have it on all the time!) and I have two books published in my EVIL VEIN trilogy.

Did you play any sports in high school?
Hell no, I never really got into sports in high school. We were supposed to have swimming classes but trust me, when I’ve spent all morning getting my hair to look like Farrah Fawcett, I’m NOT getting into a pool – “so fail me”

Tell us about your current release

Here’s the synopsis – since I can describe it a zillion ways. I have to be consistent though, right ? And I’m consistent about not getting into any swimming pools……...LOL

“All across the nation, such a strange vibration……………………..”
Word spread across the United States. Young Americans were drawn to a revolutionary underground youth subculture that was developing in an area of San Francisco, California known as Haight/Ashbury. It was 1967 and youths cast off their conservative social values and “dropped out” to form their own world, one of peace, love and tranquility. It became known as “The Summer of Love”. They sought utopia in a world of turmoil including a horrific war in Vietnam.
They were known as Hippies. Sexual and social inhibitions were dropped; politics, music, drugs and free love were the order of the day. Hells Angels and the Black Panther Party operated freely.
Some say if you were there and you remember it, you weren’t there!
KATHERINE RHODES was there and lived through that crazy, hazy period. A freak accident hurls her back through time to 1967 and into her own 20 year old hippie body. Unbelievable? Maybe. But she’s here and she has the opportunity to re-live those times a little more clearly and a lot more experienced.
The Human Be-In, Monterey Pop Festival and the Gathering of the Tribes. Her beloved brother was killed in the Vietnam War. Could she prevent that? Could she avoid the terrible relationship and doomed marriage she got herself into?
Join KATHERINE (Katie) as she re-lives the world famous 1967 Summer of Love with her friends MOONBEAM and FROG. You will meet JANIS JOPLIN, CARLOS SANTANA, CHARLES MANSON and many more……….. Oh, and be sure to wear some flowers in your hair………

When in the day/night do you write? How long per day?

I guess I’m very lucky as I can concentrate on my writing every day. My husband goes off to work and I have my daily routines……I eat breakfast, feed the dogs and cats and my African Grey parrot. I also feed about 6 more stray cats (not the band) that live on a vacant lot next door. I know !! But I feel sorry for them so I throw some cat food over the fence twice a day. It makes me feel good.
Dr. Phil makes an appearance and then I get down to work. I can put a good six hours into my writing each day. I try to do my housework and laundry before my husband gets home and we spend our evenings catching up on our TV shows. We also like to go out with friends for dinner and drinks. We love hockey and football. I don’t like baseball or basketball and golf is like watching paint dry……..
Oh, and I try, I REALLY do try to walk on my treadmill every day!

Plotter or Pantser? Why?

Talk about writing by the seat of my pants! LOL
I never start with an outline. In fact, I don’t usually have any written notes until I get several chapters into it. So far, I have never known how my stories will end – but I know when I get there….
When I start to write a new book, I see a movie playing in my head (I’m nuts, I know) and I write what I see. I mostly know what the next section will be about, but I can change my mind on a whim if a better idea strikes me.
I really do want to be more organized, honestly I DO, and I try……. I have a notebook that I keep notes in as I move through a story. I keep names and places and I have been known to draw maps! If I don’t force myself to do this I can spend ages going back through my work to check for something I can’t remember. My next step is a bulletin board – like on CSI……….LOL

Use no more than two sentences. Why should we read your book?
SUMMER OF HAIGHT ’67 is a fictional story that will take you back to the 1967 hippie era in San Francisco with chilling accuracy. It will evoke memories for those old enough, and a crazy history lesson for the rest.

EXCERPT

“Thank you.  That’s a great compliment coming from the MC, but what exactly are we discussing?  I do lots of business dealings in the Haight, many different avenues. Which one are you referring to?”

“Drugs Frog. We’re referring to drugs.”

“There’s already lots of drugs in the Haight. Are you speaking of grass, uppers, downers, acid? We have it all.”

Sal and Dave looked at each other and laughed.  “No man, not grass, not pills, and not acid,” Dave said.  “You’re right, there’s lots of that in the Haight. There are too many dealers to contend with and not enough money to be made in those drugs. Hell, half the time, the Diggers are giving that shit away free at gatherings. What we’re proposing is much more than grass, and much more profitable.  The Angels want to eventually control the drugs that are going in and out of the Haight and we want to destroy our competition in the process, but that’s a long way down the road.  Right now, all we want to do is to get our foot in the door.  We want to offer something that isn’t readily available.  What we want to know is would you be interested in a marketing agreement with the MC? The market right now is small, but with a little help it will eventually replace all the other drugs in the Haight. What we’re talking about is heroin.  Black tar heroin from Asia. We happen to have a connection that will never dry up.”
