Never Give in to Fear:Laughing All the Way Up from Rock Bottom, the enhanced edition of this darkly funny, dramatic memoir, describes an emerging standup comic’s drug-fueled descent into the underworld, escape from human traffickers, homelessness, and ultimate redemption. With brutal honesty, humor, and clarity, the author vividly describes her experiences as she rides her downward spiral: a near-miss with a notorious serial killer, a series of tragically hilarious misadventures in the California drug world, and a terrifying account of imprisonment at the hands of Japanese organized crime, to name a few. In an energetic, upbeat, and insightful style, the author brings alive a host of quirky characters, anti-heroes, and bungling criminals. “Rarely do you find such inspiration in so riveting a story. Moment to moment, the story twists and turns in a white-knuckle fashion ⎯ I held my breath in suspense, yet at the same time got the perfect amount of comic relief...Her narration is so funny and real that I found myself laughing out loud while my heart was breaking.” ⎯ Karen Rontowski, comedienne, of Late Night with David Letterman and Comedy Central
“Marti MacGibbon has written a terrific memoir...Marti, through her humor and great sense of story, takes us on a journey few, if any of us, could survive. And she survives it intact and with great style and humor.” ⎯ Mark Schiff, comedian, Tonight Show, Late Night with David Letterman: co-author, I Killed: True Stories of the Road from America’s Top Comics
“Marti MacGibbon takes you on a journey of amazing pitfalls, dizzying heights, and the depths of deepest alcoholism and drug addiction. Her recovery and redemption lift the spirit, and bring joy to the heart...most important book I have read in the past five years.” ⎯ Paul Jacek, comedian, co-host of the internet sensation “OH, MARY!” radio show on LA Talk Radio.
“Ms. MacGibbon’s memoir is a raw, honest and powerful account of her journey into addiction and her extraordinary courage, humor, and sensitivity as she travels the path to recovery. Never Give in to Fear provides readers with remarkable insight into the human condition.” ⎯ Richard Nass, Ph.D, Associate Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology, Indiana University School of Medicine
“Marti MacGibbon’s Never Give in to Fear sets a very high standard for any memoir to follow, and especially one of the genre that deals with addiction...at times hilariously gruesome, but ruthlessly hopeful, she gives the most jaded reader, whether in recovery or not, a reason to wake up and see what is new in the world. ⎯ Dr. James Vinson Carmichael Jr., Professor of Library and Information Studies, University of North Carolina at Greensboro
Despite a scheduled appearance on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, emerging standup comic Marti MacGibbon became entangled in the San Francisco drug scene and descended into the underworld. She was trafficked from San Francisco to Tokyo and sold to Japanese organized crime figures, but survived against long odds and escaped with the help of a Hong Kong smuggler. After returning to the U.S., Marti realized she had to survive the surviving. Like all addicts, she tried using dope and alcohol to cope, and her addiction spiraled out of control. She was under-the-bridge homeless for a year or so, but during that time she met her true love. After years of addiction -- and some hilarious misadventures, she recovered, learning to give, and to receive, love and forgiveness. Her critically acclaimed memoir, Never Give in to Fear: Laughing All the Way Up from Rock Bottom, tells her story in an upbeat and insightful style. The e-book is a # 1 Bestseller on Amazon.com.
Marti has worked as a professional standup comic for years. But she knew she wanted to give more to life than laughs, so she enrolled at ICDS Pacific West, (Institute for Chemical Dependency Studies), obtaining education and training as an addiction treatment specialist. In 2007 she completed her internship at Twin Town Treatment Centers in Los Angeles, and later began working as an addictions counselor to homeless veterans at Swords to Plowshares, a groundbreaking non-profit organization established in 1974 by homeless Viet Nam veterans. Marti continues to work at Swords to Plowshares on a volunteer basis. In August 2010, she earned the distinction of Advanced Certified Relapse Prevention Specialist (ACRPS). This certification qualifies her to work as a consultant, assisting relapse prone patients at addiction treatment facilities.
As a recovering addict and survivor of human trafficking and domestic violence, Marti is dedicated to raising awareness of these issues. She speaks at anti-trafficking events around the U.S., and has spoken or performed standup at domestic violence shelters. She currently sits on the board of Laff-aholics, as President. Laff-aholics Standup Comedy Benefit for Recovery, an annual event, is dedicated to creating laughter, fun and social connectivity for people in recovery from addiction, as well as to raise funds for transitional housing and treatment facilities in the Indianapolis area. Marti produces and emcees the show.
