daynight by Megan Thomason: Character Interview

daynight by Megan Thomason

Meet The Second Chance Institute (SCI): Earth’s benevolent non-profit by day, Thera’s totalitarian regime by night. Their motto: Because Everyone Deserves a Second Chance™. Reality: the SCI subjects Second Chancers to strict controls and politically motivated science experiments like Cleaving—forced lifetime union between two people who have sex.

Meet Kira Donovan. Fiercely loyal, overly optimistic, and ensnared by the promise of a full-ride college scholarship, Kira signs the SCI Recruit contract to escape memories of a tragedy that left her boyfriend and friends dead.

Meet Blake Sundry. Bitter about being raised in Exile and his mother’s death, Blake’s been trained to infiltrate and destroy the SCI. Current barrier to success? His Recruit partner—Miss Goody Two Shoes Kira Donovan.

Meet Ethan Darcton. Born with a defective heart and resulting inferiority complex, Ethan’s forced to do his SCI elite family’s bidding. Cleave-worthy Kira Donovan catches his eye, but the presiding powers give defect-free Blake Sundry first dibs.

Full of competing agendas, romantic entanglements, humor, twists and turns, daynight is Megan Thomason’s debut young adult dystopian novel and first in the daynight series.

Character Interview with Kira Donovan from daynight
Where do you dream of traveling to and why?
My entire life, I’ve dreamed of visiting all the places my parents went without my brother and me—Europe, Africa, Australia, South America… That’s one of the reasons I signed a year contract with The Second Chance Institute, a non-profit with offices in all these locations. The SCI promised to send me to one of their more remote locations and to give me a full ride college scholarship for my service. And frankly I needed to get away from home and the memories that haunted me there. What the SCI failed to mention was that their remote locations are on Thera, Earth’s sister planet. Or that I’d be signing away my liberties and completely subject to SCI rule there.
What was the scariest moment of your life?
I thought it was watching my boyfriend and friends be blown to bits in an explosion. But, the more I spend time with the SCI on Thera, the more I see that there are many things just as scary as death.
What are you passionate about these days?
For a moment I thought you asked who I was passionate about these days and I was going to have to give you the trite answer, “It’s complicated.” As for what I’m passionate about, I’d have to say that I’m quite passionate about figuring out how to stop the SCI from using people. They’re surely using me in unconscionable ways, but I’m concerned about all the ways the SCI manipulates Second Chancers—the same people they profess to help.
What do you do to unwind and relax?
Yoga. Stargazing from our sunroom mid-night. I used to enjoy hiking the canyons before the sun rose and the heat got unbearable, but not so much anymore.
If you could apologize to someone in your past, who would it be?
My parents. I took them for granted growing up. Even considered them to be selfish and uninvolved. But now I realize that they taught me critical survival skills. My mom hammered into me the ability to plaster on a smile, no matter what I’m thinking. Bring on the worst and I’ll maintain my poker face, and wait until I’m in private to fall apart. I do believe this ability has kept me alive on Thera. Had I told the SCI a fraction of what I really thought about them, their agendas, or methods, I’d be Exiled or dead. I choose to live… and keep those I care about alive, no matter what the personal cost to me.
Morning Person? Or Night Person? How do you know?
I used to be a morning person? But, ever since I got to Thera, where days and nights are switched, my internal clock has been a wreck. We sleep at day, train and school at night. The schedule is rigid and mandatory, so I have no choice but to adapt.
What makes you happy?
I’ve come to appreciate the simple things like personal choice and freedom. Not to mention home, family, fast food, shopping, music, trashy novels and TV shows… all of which are missing on Thera. So instead, I choose to be content with being alive and keeping as many of the people I love alive as possible.
What is the next big thing?
Forced travel. And more training. And some things that I can’t admit to myself, much less deal with yet.
What one word best describes you?
Loyal. Often to a fault.
What is something people would be surprised to know about you?
I’m a mess. Everyone thinks I’m so calm, composed and cheerful—the epitome of the ‘glass is half full’ analogy. Internally, though, I’m churning. I keep stuffing things in my ‘to deal with later’ mental bin and it’s so full right now, I know I’m due for a complete mental breakdown. Hopefully, I can stave it off until everyone I love is safe and protected.
Do you have a favorite quote, quip, or saying? What is it?
I have a lot of favorite sayings, but the one that comes to mind since I’ve done a crappy job doing it is “Trust, but verify,” by Ronald Reagan. Seems relevant to apply to boyfriends, friends, and potential employer, to name a few.
