What ten things do you enjoy most?

1.      Family—my four children, husband and two stepchildren. I feel incredibly blessed to have traveled all the way to The Philippines to become a parent. My husband? Barry and I both survived divorce from partners with whom we’d spent decades. Two years ago we met on Match.com and were engaged within weeks. Barry’s kids are also a delight—they’re close in age to my twenty-something kids.

2.      Reading—virtually every novelist begins the road to publication in early childhood through the discovery of books. There’s nothing quite as delicious as a lazy afternoon spent with an enthralling read.

3.      The ocean—Barry and I moved to Charleston, South Carolina last year well before retirement because we both love tropical climes. We live ten minutes from the beach, where the tumultuous waves of the Atlantic provide a daily respite from life’s demands.

4.      Friendship—the men and women we carry through life like adopted family members, kindred souls who listen to our doubts and dreams with unstinting compassion.

5.      Spirit—the sense that we aren’t alone in the universe, that a higher power cradles us in love despite every doubt and fear we entertain.

6.      Writing—leaving the everyday world for an extended journey into a world I’ve created and populated with sweet, stumbling, heroic people we all want to know.

7.      Wonder—the ability to see life through fresh eyes, to revel in birdsong at dawn or savor a rose’s scent at dusk. The childlike delight that allows us to walk through a forest with a sense of the sacred surrounding us, to live deep and love well.

8.      Food—seared salmon and spring’s first peach. Pad Thai and lasagna and the shrimp and grits that have made Charleston famous. During the holiday season I love cooking for a crowd with the air scented by cinnamon and sage; I love to spill a basket of fresh strawberries across a picnic table in May for the sheer joy of enjoying color as bright as the taste.

9.      Laughter—the whispered, knowing chuckles of women with their heads bent close or the joyous abandonment of a child hurtling toward heaven on a swing. The laughter shared by lovers and the chortle of a grandfather as he retells a well-loved story. Laughter binds us and lightens a hard day; it reminds us that we’re human and though we can’t touch the stars, we should forever reach for them.

10.  Readers—like the young law student who read one of my novels in a sort of stunned rapture. Or the woman who tweeted as she finished each chapter. The readers who connect on GoodReads or send private mail. Storytelling is a labor of love carried out in isolation. Without the company of readers, it would be lonely as well.

An unforgettable tale of love, loss and second chances.

Second Chance Grill is the prequel to Treasure Me, 2012 Next Generation Indie Awards Finalist, which The Midwest Book Review calls “A riveting read for those who enjoy adventure fiction, highly recommended.”

Dr. Mary Chance needs a sabbatical from medicine to grieve the loss of her closest friend. But when she inherits a struggling restaurant in Liberty, Ohio she isn’t prepared for Blossom Perini. Mary can’t resist falling for the precocious preteen—or the girl’s father. The bond they forge will transform all their lives and set in motion an outpouring of love that spreads across America.

Welcome back to Liberty, where the women surrounding the town’s only restaurant are as charming as they are eccentric.

Mary Chance inherits a restaurant in Liberty Ohio and jumps at the opportunity it offers for a new beginning and a welcome break away from her medical career. Still mourning the loss of her best friend, Mary is excited to be taking her life in a new direction.  She needs the break and jumps right in to small town life.

This delightful story swept me up and away to Liberty and the Second Chance Grill. Ms Nolfi writes beautifully evocative sentences that allow readers to savor the little nuggets and nuances of feeling.  Her characters are richly envisioned, quirky, and believable.  The prose in this story is outstanding, capturing the moments indelibly in the reader’s memory, but it is the characters and their interactions together that make the story such a pleasure to read.  There is plenty of humor along the way, but mostly what Ms.Nolfi captures will astounding accuracy is each individual’s unique personality.  There is a dash of mystery along with the sweet romance.

This second book in the Liberty series is a prequel to Treasure Me, but each book stands alone easily.  Either can be read first without any loss of enjoyment or cohesion.
