Excerpt: Chapter One -- Now
Welcome Ann! I’m so pleased you have returned with another book and we are getting this new chance to learn more about you, too. How did you start your writing career?
I started writing stories when I was a teen, but it was discouraged in my household. When I got to college, I took it up again, and began to win a few awards.
Tell us about a favorite character from a book.
I admired Jo, in The Little Women, and Laura Ingalls Wilder in her books because they are such strong female characters. On the flip side, I loved Nick Andros in The Shining. He had overcome so many obstacles and ignorant people, and yet it hadn't made him bitter.
Where do you dream of traveling to and why?
I love to go to the beach because it is the opposite of where I live in the desert!
Tell us about your current release.
This book, All For Love, is about a woman whose Mr. Right turns out to be Mr. Wrong, but she loves him anyway. It’s very realistic fiction. Here is one of the 5 star reviews:
“I started and finished this book in less than a day. It was impossible to put down. This book isn't a fairytale romance, with a prince or even a "happily-ever-after" (although, the ending was great); this book is about real-life romance, one in which people get hurt, deeply hurt, and need to decide whether that person is still the one for them.”
My next release is The Phantom Student, October 23rd. It is Book Two in the Phantom Series (paranormal). The Phantom Pilot was book one. These are ghost stories for the young and young at heart. In The Phantom Student, Jase and Stevie-girl must find out why a phantom girl is haunting Stevie. They think it has something to do with the new student, a boy who has Tourette Syndrome.
Has someone been instrumental in inspiring you as a writer?
I cut my teeth on Jack London, Edgar Allan Poe, Mary Stewart, and John Steinbeck. I also loved the old Twilight Zone and Alfred Hitchcock Presents series on TV (that dates me, huh?). Anyhow, I always wanted to write stories like those. When I was a young woman, I moved on to Stephen King, Dean Koonce, and Anne Rice. Now, I read anything and everything from George RR Martin to Clare Cook (chick-lit).
Who is your favorite author?
Probably Stephen King. I love the way he puts the reader into any setting and makes it believable.
What does your significant other and family think of your writing career?
My husband is very supportive of my writing. He is usually my first reader, although my daughter is also an author (Sara Barnard, A Heart on Hold), so whoever has time reads it first. I’m very fortunate that I also have a cadre of other friends and relatives who like to read my stuff. And I have to give a shout out to my friends at The Abilene Writer’s Guild. That’s where I met my first editor, Denise Vitola (YoDen!).
